The Community Hive is dedicated to connecting those interested in learning new skills of self sufficiency to information about honeybees and honeybee keeping. By doing so, we hope to help create the Hive Mentality within our communities. Focused on urban and hobby beekeeping, we are eager to offer opportunities for community members to share their interests, passions and skills in both the Community Hive Chat Room and through the annual Collaborative Purchase of Honeybees and Equipment.

The values of the Community Hive are to offer an avenue for respectful, reliable, and responsible open-source information sharing on all things beekeeping. This site is self-moderated and as a member you are expected to treat others with respect and compassion, allowing for all members of all stages of learning to gain from the information and experience of the community. You can use this site to find a mentor beekeeper in your community, find a beekeeper for your yard or a yard for your bees, or just share your enthusiasm for all things bees! It is open to your whims, questions, or comments! The Chat Room also offers a forum for any other information that you would like to share by allowing you to create unique topics of discussion (assuming that the topics fit one or more of the following criteria: encourage community engagement, revolve around food sovereignty, self-sufficiency skills and or sustainability living practices). Membership and use is free and the site is managed by Associcom.com and Backyardbees.ca.

The CP is dedicated to bringing beekeeping to hobbyists as sustainably as possible and as cheaply as possible. Through bulk purchasing power we are able to source beekeeping equipment developed and made by local artisans and businesses within the province of Alberta. Our goal is to have 80% of the equipment purchased through the CP sourced locally, supporting local economies and beekeepers. We also source the honeybees from Bill Stagg of sweetacreapiaries.ca in Tappen, BC. If you would like to participate in the Collaborative Purchase you will need to pay a $30 participation fee (which helps pay for the chat room, website, and future community events) and fill out the necessary applications according to the season schedule of the ordering. Click on this link for more information.

We hope that you will join us in conversation, learn more about bees and your community, find a mentor, laugh and learn from your peers, and help us in creating the Hive Mentality in a community near you!
